Description

This workshop will present the major features of Cognitive Therapy for Suicidal Patients (Wenzel, Brown, & Beck; 2009; APA Books). Workshop participants will learn the history behind and rationale underlying this protocol, as well as the cognitive behavioral theory that was crafted to understand suicidal behavior on the basis of constructs investigated in the empirical literature. Key activities that occur in each phase of treatment will be described and demonstrated in role-play format. Specifically, in the early phase of treatment, informed consent, safety planning, and case formulation will be highlighted. In the middle phase of treatment, strategies for affect management and the development of reasons for living will be modeled. In the late phase of treatment, an imaginal relapse prevention task will be presented. The workshop will end with a consideration of therapist self-care and burnout. Moreover, a brief description of results from randomized controlled trials establishing the efficacy of this treatment will be discussed.

Objectives

• Attendees will be able to articulate the main constructs in the cognitive behavioral model of suicidal thoughts and behavior.
• Attendees will acquire the knowledge to assist their clients in developing a safety plan in the early phase of treatment.
• Attendees will understand cognitive, affective, and behavioral strategies that target suicide-relevant cognitive processes and modifiable risk factors for suicidal behavior.
• Attendees will be able to describe the steps in implementing an imaginal relapse prevention task in the late phase of treatment.

Workshop Leader

Amy Wenzel, Ph.D., ABPP is the Founder and Director of the Main Line Center for Evidence-Based Psychotherapy, Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, Adjunct Faculty at the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavior Therapy, and Certified Trainer-Consultant with the Academy of Cognitive Therapy. She is the author or editor of over 20 books and 100 peer-reviewed journals and book chapters, many on the topic of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Her research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression (now the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation). She lectures on CBT across the globe and has trained clinicians internationally to achieve competence in CBT. She has been featured in many video demonstrations of CBT by the American Psychological Association.

There will be an hour lunch and two 15-minute breaks.

Those who attend this workshop in full and complete the appropriate evaluation form will receive continuing education (CE) credits. Those who arrive more than 15 minutes after the start time or leave before the workshop ends will not receive CE credit.
